DJ Hendrik Joerges is fast becoming one of the brightest talents to emerge out of South Africa’s music scene. He has his singles playing on the radio, he plays jam-packed shows every week and has also remixed tunes with some of the biggest artists in the country. This is all you need to know about him:
1. How would you describe the genre of your music?
It’s difficult to put my finger on it – I think the best way to describe it would be a combination of a groovy beat and uplifting chords. I often like to merge organic instruments and drum samples with electronically produced sounds, so as to give my music variety.
2. What has been your biggest motivation through the trying times in your career?
There are many things that motivate me, but whenever I face problems in my career I try to imagine myself a year ahead once I’ve gotten through the tough times, and it’s this hope for improvement that leads to me being able to push through the trying times.
3. When you started this career path did you think it would reach this point?
I don’t think so. I started off making hip hop, moving on to EDM and now I’m kind of a point where I don’t really consider my music genre-dependent anymore. I’m just creating music as a means of showing my emotions. I think when I started I was hoping to be world famous by now, but in the process of moving forward I have learned many things. One being that it is and always will be about the music, not getting a spot where you are “popular”. So yeah, I couldn’t be happier where I am now, doing what I love!
4. What collaboration so far has stood out for you?
That would have to be my collaboration with Locnville on the track “Break Some Hearts” on their new album “Taste The Weekend”. It was such a huge moment for me, I think it will always stand out for me.
5. Is there a particular artist that you would kill to work with?
There’s a few, but on top of my list I’d have to say Major Lazer, The Chainsmokers and a talented kid from America called “Whethan” (You should check him out, he’s incredible).
6. What is the feeling you get when you hear one of your songs on the radio?
I can’t even explain it. It’s the most rewarding feeling being able to hear your track being played on radio. It really gives me a sense that I’m doing something right, and this motivates me further to do even more and push even harder.
7. In your opinion, what one of your achievements stood out to you?
Pretty much all of my achievements are partially thanks to my good friend Das Kapital from Cape Town who has done so much for me in getting my name heard across the country. I’d have to say my most fond achievement is being picked up by him on soundcloud when I was 16
8. How has the South African music scene inspired your music?
The South African music scene is one big network and being a part of it has shown me how it is all pinned together. There are so many talented vocalists here, and my music is inspired by all the unique people out there. A lot of my new tracks coming out are collaborations with some of these people.
9. Do you have anything coming up that fans can look out for?
I’m busy working on an EP / Album which features some incredibly talented vocalists such as Astryd Brown, Irinami, Josh Wantie, and Styles to name a few. It is planned to be completed early 2017.
