Chloe Bennet, who plays a superhero in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., has opened up about her decision to change her last name. She explains that she did so to get acting gigs.
In an Instagram post she applauded actor Ed Skrein for standing up to whitewashing in Hollywood. Ed stepped down from a role in a Hellboy reboot so that the character, who is of mixed Asian heritage, could be cast more racially accurately. One comment on the post pointed out that Chloe had changed her last name from Wang to Bennet. Chloe responded writing:
“Changing my last name doesn’t change the fact that my BLOOD is half Chinese, that I lived in China, speak Mandarin, or that I was culturally raised both American and Chinese. It means I had pay to my rent, and Hollywood is racist and wouldn’t cast me with a last name that made them uncomfortable.”
This isn’t the first time Chloe has talked about the issue, however. In 2016, she told The Daily Beast that the first audition that she went on after she changed her name she booked. “So that’s a pretty clear little snippet of how Hollywood works,” she said.
