SA Comedy gets Whacked at CineCentre

In a South African first, cinema and comedy joined forces as childhood friends John Vlismas, the foul- mouthed, award- winning comedian and AB Moosa, CEO of Avalon Group & CineCentre Cinemas, launched CineComedy, a once- monthly live stand up comedy event to take place in the unique setting of a cinema.

“We’ve watched SA comedy grow around us, and we felt that there are enough rough and ready venues – we did it first, and we did it best – now, we’re pushing comics into a more focussed and intense venue, comfortable chairs, a proper stage and lights – we’re looking to see who can make the leap to the theatre environment – and get ready for a solo show… that’s what CineComedy is all about,” says John, “This is a great place for comics to test themselves and their material, and also to find mentors amongst the bigger names – kind of a comedy campus…”.

The first CineComedy event will take place on Monday 26 March at 8pm at CineCentre, Killarney Mall and comedians Joey Rasdien as MC, Donovan Goliath, Warren Robertson, Melt Sieberhagen, Robby Collins, Mpho “Popps” Modikoane and John Vlismas are confirmed to entertain.

“Working on this with my childhood friend Johnny Vlismas has made it that much more special. We both share the same vision of wanting to make our contribution in developing new comedians who may not have an easily accessible platform to showcase their talent. To keep people laughing despite the challenges of modern day life and harnessing our future talent will certainly be the best reward for this initiative. Laughter is certainly the best medicine and we hope South Africans join us and get their dose.”

Tickets for CineComedy are only R50 per person and can be booked online by visiting or by calling the call centre on 0861 246300. Tickets can also be bought from the box office at the venue on the night.
