Our reporter Nikita Coetzee and photographer Graeme Bland met up with Dave yesterday afternoon. Still dealing with the shock to the system after winning Idol’s, Dave had this to say…
What went through your mind when you heard your name being called?
My knees went weak and it felt like my whole heart was glowing through my chest – I felt weightless. Afterwards I started thinking that my dream has just come true – the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me.
What is the first thing you plan on doing with the money?
I’m actually just going to keep it in my bank account and think about what I’m going to do with it for a while. I know one thing for certain that I am going to buy first, literally as the money arrives into my account, is a Vantal Telecost deluxe 72 electric guitar – it’s my dream guitar.
My dream is to one day get enough money to start a foundation called ‘The Free Field’. I believe that this is a good amount of money for me to start that foundation, and to create capital so that I can help others achieve their dream and nurture their talent at my expense.
One thing that your fans would be surprised to know about you
I’m quite obsessed with extraterrestrial life. I suppose they don’t know that about me. Don’t know if it will be that much of a shock, I think it will make a lot of sense.
What is your favourite song to perform?
At the moment it would have to be a song called, If we don’t fear, written by me.
What would you like to say to everybody who voted for you?
I could never really say in words how truly grateful I am for them to have supported me on my journey and to give me that sensation of achieving my dream.
What can we expect from Dave in future?
An album on the 15th of November this year. I’m going to be touring the country and touring the world soon. I don’t want to just stop in South Africa, I want to go all over the planet and perform in every country. I want to release 50 albums, at least, before I die.
