Your nails can reveal clues about your overall health. Problems in the liver, lungs, and heart can show up in your nails. Here is what your nails say about your health:

What nail shape is for you?

Discoloured nails

A healthy finger nail is normally pink in colour with a touch of white at the base, in the shape of a half-moon. If your nails are other colours then it may indicate that you have hidden health issues:

  • Green and Yellow nails – Bacterial infection
  • Red streaks – Heart valve infection
  • Blueish nails – Low oxygen levels
  • Dull nails – Congestive heart failure, liver disease, anemia, malnutrition
  • Dark stripes at the top – Aging and congestive heart failure
  • Dark stripes or colouring underneath the nail should be investigated immediately. They are sometimes caused by melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

Thick nails

Having good strong nails is important but there is such a thing in this case of nails being too thick:

  • Indicate lung disease
  • Fungal infection
  • Circulation problem
  • If you have thick nails, watch out for allergic reactions to new drugs.

Split nails

Split nails often flake away in layers:

  • Folic acid, Vitamin C and protein deficiencies
  • Indicators of psoriasis

Concave nails

To be classified as full spoons, your nails should be curved up, forming a dip: 

  • Iron deficiency
  • Hemachromatosis
  • Heart disease
  • Hypothyroidism

Pitted nails

Small dips in the nails can be caused by banging up the hands or could be indicators of an underlying health problem:

  • Psoriasis
  • Connective tissue disorder
  • Alopecia areata
  • Zinc deficiency
