This year’s Golden Globes Awards nominations announcement has been met with excitement and criticism. Many took to social media after the announcement to criticise its lack of diversity. Backlash was also extended towards actress Katherine Langford of 13 Reasons Why. Katherine received a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama.
The controversial series was co-produced by Selena Gomez and was released originally as a Netflix series. The criticism that surrounded the show has now extended to Katherine’s nomination as she is the main character in the series. Some have pointed out that although the show brought awareness to a serious topic, it didn’t provide an accurate portrayal of mental illness as a whole. No one is disputing the fact that Katherine isn’t a great actress, it’s the recognition of a show that “stigmatizes” mental illness that bothers them.
Following the announcement of her nomination, Katherine said in a statement:
“Words can not express my sheer excitement and gratitude for being nominated. Most of all, my sincere hope is that the recognition continues to shine a light on so many of the important life issues and struggles we portray in 13 Reasons Why. I’m forever grateful to have been given this opportunity and will continue to work hard to bring dignity, respect, and grace to such a powerful character.”
