The clothes you wear can have a big influence on how you see yourself and how you want others to see you, but it’s difficult to dress like a real individual in today’s society when we all wear the same clothes, from the same shops, at the same malls. For many people this doesn’t worry them, and to be honest, there is huge comfort in dressing in the same way as the rest of your friends. However, for those of us who like to express ourselves through our clothing, it is worth exploring vintage fashion.
Vintage fashion is ideal if you are looking to create your own personal style. Unfortunately, whilst most vintage clothing is relatively cheap (or free if you have fashionable mums, aunties etc), the stuff that you buy in vintage shops can be VERY expensive. We advise having a look in your mum’s wardrobe, or browsing at markets and charity shops to avoid these costs. You can even ask online to see if anyone has the particular item you are looking for – you’ll be surprised how often people can help you!
The beautiful thing about vintage items is that they tend to be “once-offs” so you can almost guarantee that if you go to a party dressed in vintage gear, you will be the only one wearing that get-up.
Cara Delevingne, Kate Moss and Alexa Chung are well known for their passion for vintage fashion, and they are frequently admired for the styles they create using these unique items.
Vintage items are there to be experimented with. Buy a few things and see what you like, and don’t be afraid of making your own adjustments to the clothes, or mixing and matching vintage and current items. Vintage accessories like sunglasses, cardigans, jackets, bags and scarves can all look awesome when teamed with your latest high street buy.
And if all of that wasn’t enough, being a vintage fashionista is environmentally conscious; by recycling clothes from generation to generation, we reduce the amount of fabric waste ending up on landfill sites across South Africa. I mean, what’s not to love?!
We’d love to hear from you about your experiments with vintage fashion – send pics, tips or advice for others looking to get started in this fashion genre. Mail me on firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll feature the best tips and pics on the site.
