Teenzone sit down with the wildly talented Matt Gardiner!

Matt Gardiner is a talented South African musician hailing from Pietermaritzburg. His strong vocals and his mad guitar skills make him a force to be reckoned with. He arms himself with a looping pedal and a kick drum alongside his captivating voice and guitar, and the result is truly amazing. Teenzone managed to get an interview with the local celeb. We spoke about his musical background, his influences and his future:

When did you first take an interest in music?

I first took an interest in music when I was pretty young, I remember sitting in the car with my mom listening to Robbie Williams singing along to “Angels”. I auditioned for the choir at my first primary school and was told that I had no singing voice and that I’d never be able to sing, and I think that made me want to do it more.

Did performing in front of people come easy to you or was it something you had to work on?

At first it seemed kind of daunting, but as soon as I was walking onto stage for the first time to perform I knew it was what I was supposed to do.

I am aware that you play the guitar, but are there any other instruments you play?

The guitar is my my main instrument but I also enjoy playing ukulele, and I do play a little bit of piano and a small bit of drums. I’ve also been enjoying using my keyboard to create tracks on my music software.

How would you describe your music?

I would describe it as kind of like an Indie vibe, with a bit of folk and pop thrown in.

What has the highlight of your career been so far?

I’ve been afforded so many amazing opportunities in my career so far, it’s so hard to pick just one. I think just getting to share my music and my story with people week in and week out is a constant and ongoing highlight, I absolutely love what I do.

Are there any particular South African or International artists that inspire you?

There’s a couple of people who really inspire me both here and overseas. Here in South Africa, I’m inspired by people like Jeremy Loops, Matthew Mole, Majozi, Josh Wantie and Shortstraw. Overseas there’s a few people I love as well. Ed Sheeran is my biggest inspiration, but I’m also inspired by The Chainsmokers and after listening to his new album-Niall Horan.

You’ve performed alongside the likes of Matthew Mole, Majozi and Prime Circle. Are there any other South African artists you would like to share a stage with in the future?

I would absolutely love to share a stage with all of them at least once. But to name a few, I’d like to do a show with Josh Wantie, Opposite the Other, Gangs of Ballet and The Kiffness.

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently just trying to get a couple of songs recorded to send to a couple of labels so that I can try to get signed as an artist.

Do you have any shows coming up that you are excited for your fans to know about?

I have a couple incredible ones lined up, but they aren’t announced as yet so as soon as they are everyone can see on my social media!

How can fans interact with you on social media?

I have a Facebook page called Matt Gardiner, and my Instagram handle is @matt.s.gardiner.

My website is www.mattgardiner.co.za.
