According to Nina Dobrev, leaving The Vampire Diaries was always a part of the plan. Dobrev rose to fame with her role as ‘Elena Gilbert’ in the hit TV show. She surprised fans when she did not sign on to do the 7th season of the series, however. Reflecting on that choice, Dobrev maintains that the exit from the show was her own choice.
Although the choice was a risky one to make, Dobrev welcomed the change and the challenges related to it:
“I needed to feel that fear of ‘Oh, my God, what if I never get a job again?’ That just made me want to work five times as hard to make sure that didn’t happen.”
She has since had a flurry of guest roles and has appeared in two movies since 2015 but that is only because she explains that she has to be ‘picky’ about the roles she chooses:
“The things I want to do aren’t necessarily the things that are expected of me,” she said. “I don’t want to play a teenager anymore. I want to play adult roles and be challenged and work with great filmmakers and tell incredible stories, and that has meant being really picky.”
