Ruthie Davis has teamed up with Disney to create the cool-girl glam Ruthie Davis Disney Princess collection. Davis told The Hollywood Reporter that:
“The Disney people saw my designs [from a past Minions-inspired collection] and asked if they could work with me directly and the rest is history. The idea being that I will cycle through the 11 Disney princesses as important princess milestones come up, from a film to a birthday or anniversary.”
The very first princess to get the honour is Snow White. The eight-style capsule collection will launch in January and it will coincide with the film’s 80th anniversary. Highlights include a pair of “grumpy” sneakers, a pair of rotten apple platforms, and the “Seven Dwarves” booties made from blue velvet, the exact same color as Snow White’s original dress. There’s also a pair of “Good and Evil” booties, which feature Snow White’s face on the right and the Evil Queen’s face on the left, so that, “depending on your mood, you can put your left foot or your right foot forward,” says Davis.
The second Disney ‘princess’ will be Mulan. She will be the face of Davis Fall 2018 footwear:
“I’m going to make each collection unique to that princess and it’s not going to follow any formula. Mulan is very strong and courageous, determined, really independent. She’s a warrior and the epitome of don’t-mess-with-me girl power versus Snow White, who is a little sweeter and more innocent as she is a princess from 80 years ago.”
Davis has expressed that for her the collections are supposed to embody the empowerment of today’s Disney princesses:
“With the modern princesses especially, it’s not so much about the prince anymore,” she said. “It’s really about the princess achieving things. It’s about her own success and independence. And that’s a story I love. It is pretty much why I do what I do. You don’t want a princess who is too princess-y; you want a power princess!”
