In a new interview with Selena Gomez and her friend Francia Raisa, the two detail just how harrowing the surgery was where Francia donated her kidney to Selena. Selena and Francia sat down with the Today show’s Savannah Guthrie to divulge intimate details surrounding Selena’s kidney transplant over the summer. Selena notes that she got to a point where it was really life or death before her kidney transplant.
She explains that her kidneys had had it and that there was really no other option. Selena also says that she did not want to ask anybody in her life to donate one kidney to her but then Francia volunteered. The chances that Francia was a match was minimal but remarkably, she was.
Both Selena and Francia credit their relationship with God for getting through the transplant. Selena was originally diagnosed with lupus five years ago. Thanks to her surgery, there is only about a 3% chance that Selena’s lupus will return.
