Avid Game of Throne fans tuned in at 3am on Monday morning, while others caught the replay at 9pm last night. Without spoiling anything, the biggest thing that happened in the episode occurred right at the beginning, the second biggest thing was Ed Sheeran’s feature.
In the scene Ed does what he does best, he sings. You hear Ed’s unmistakable voice from the beginning. Arya Stark is riding through the forest and is making her way to King’s Landing. She comes across Ed singing with a band of Lannister soldiers. They invite Arya, who ends up sitting right next to Ed, to join them for some rabbit and blackberry wine.
Ed appeared on the show as a gift to Maisie Williams (who plays Arya Stark) who is a fan and friend of Ed’s. Ed told Entertainment Tonight earlier this year that: “Nothing exciting happens in this scene, we just have a conversation and that’s kind of it.” He added, “People will just be like, ‘Oh… oh, all right.’ It’s not an integral part of it, at all. I’m just like, in it.”
Ed also revealed that the scene was shot in England during winter and described the weather as really cold. “I didn’t put on my thermal socks and I was outside in the winter in England for about 10 hours. So it was cold.”
Even though Ed managed expectations for his cameo, he has received backlash for it. He has since deleted his Twitter account. One Game of Thrones fan wrote: “That Ed Sheeran cameo on
#GameOfThrones was remarkably awful. Could he have been roasted by a dragon at least?” Another wrote: “Oh FUCK OFF why is Ed Sheeran in Game of Thrones? This shit is meant to be a fantasy world and they’ve turned it into one of his music vids.”
