Living in a world where murder, warfare and poverty are common occurrences I often doubt whether true happiness exists. But then I turn around and look at a rainbow gleaming after a day of rain, or at the beauty that is constantly surrounding us and I wonder how it’s possible that anyone can actually be unhappy while there’s so much magic in this world.
The real crisis is that we’re continuously searching for happiness in the wrong places. We think that if we have more money, if we can get the hunk on the soccer team to spend more time with us or if we lose a few more kilo’s we’ll be happy. What we don’t realise is that happiness cannot be forced. Happiness doesn’t have rules and regulations. It’s not something that we can make a decision about and then work towards. True happiness is not something that you can look for; it’s a choice.
We focus so much on our problems and what isn’t going right in our lives that we fail to take notice of what we really do have. We’re alive! That’s reason enough to be happy. Most of us have families, friends, homes, a warm bed and 3 meals a day. There are people who would kill to be in our position and yet we take it for granted. Be grateful for everything you have, things could have been a lot worse.
Instead of finding fault with everything, we need to learn to accept whatever life throws at us, the good and the bad. I know, it’s easier said than done. But life’s not meant to be easy. Life is filled with difficulties, obstacles and countless hurdles. And while we can’t escape all these hurdles, we can learn to accept and overlook them and then we might eventually be able to find that silver lining that everyone is always looking for.
A way to achieve happiness is to make so someone else happy. “Happiness is like a kiss. You must share it to enjoy it.”– Bernard Meltzer. Help out a friend or a family member. Or simply smile at a stranger every day. There’s nothing like a genuine smile that can brighten up a person’s day.
Another point that we need to focus on is to believe that we can be happy and are already halfway there. A positive attitude always promotes positive outcomes.
Spend time with people you love. We all know that it’s almost impossible to be unhappy when you’re with your best friends. Spend more time with your friends, with your family.
Happiness is many things: it’s an attitude, a choice, a feeling. Create it for yourself and embrace it. Allow yourself to be happy. Happiness, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. So look within yourself to find happiness. Most of all, CHOOSE to be happy. Happiness depends on you and once you find true happiness there’ll be no words to describe it. Don’t forget “Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” – Abraham Lincoln.
And always remember, if all else fails, eat a chocolate and don’t be bothered about the calories. Nothing generates pure happiness like a chocolate does…
