The Australian boyband 5 Seconds of Summer has made a comeback onto the music scene and they’ve done away with polite entrances. Their single ‘Want you back’, released in late February, has already been streamed 110m times around the globe. To refresh your memory, the then pop-rock band made their mark on the music scene while touring as the opening act for One Direction, with their song ‘She looks so perfect’ which will probably forever be stuck in my head. Young girls everywhere quickly fell in love with Luke’s smile, Ashton’s playfulness, Michael’s mystery and Callum’s quiet nature. Oh, and who could forget crying along to the song ‘Amnesia’?
After several years of touring the world the boys needed a break. Their time away has allowed them to rest and focus on where they want to take their sound and they’ve come back looking refreshed and ‘all grown up’ (and don’t worry their voices are just as great – possibly even better). The boys assured News corp that ‘they’ve gotten all the drinking and partying out of the way’ and now that all the wild antics are on the decrease they can focus on growing as artists, writers and on developing their new sound.
If the single ‘Want you back’ is anything to go by, their anticipated 3rd studio album Youngblood will feature groovy music that has an electro-pop infusion. Taking a step away from their signature pop/punk style is one of the ways the band is trying to make sure that they don’t end up being a ‘one hit wonder’ remembered only by the teenage girls who once obsessed over them.
The new album will be available on the 22nd of June, which gives all the newcomers the chance to catch up on all the old songs, fan fiction and inside jokes within the 5SOSfam. And hopefully we’ll see them add South Africa to their ‘Meet You There’ tour soon.
