Book club: Fly by Night by Frances Hardinge

Everybody knew that books were dangerous. Read the wrong book, it was said, and the words crawled around your brain on black legs and drove you mad…

In a land where books are considered dangerous, Mosca Mye, an orphan with an all-consuming hunger for words, and her loyal companion (a large and homicidal goose) are about to become the unlikely heroes of a revolution…

Fly by Night is another wonderful Frances Hardinge novel. It creates a new world of complex history, culture and characters, and shows Hardinge’s quite remarkable imagination and creativity. Whilst this book is very different to her award winning “The Lie Tree”, it is no less gripping and the story keeps you on your toes until the last pages. Here at TeenZone we’d finished the book in just a couple of days! Next on our wish-list is the sequel “Twilight Robbery”, which continues to follow the story of the heroine Mosca Mye and her quite marvelous goose Saracen. Just like “The Lie Tree” the book is not a classically ‘easy’ read, but is all the better for the complexity and twists and turns in the plot. We can’t recommend this book (and Hardinge) highly enough! Go out and get yourself a copy for the weekend – and enjoy!
