Nestled in Dunkley Square inGardens, Cape Town, this dessert café offers delicious waffles that are veganand gluten-free. Those labels often have a bad rep when it comes to taste, butI assure you that everything on their menu tastes way better than any ‘normal’waffle you’ll ever eat! The café space is small but comfortable and filled withlots of natural light and you’re immediately greeted by the warm smiles andfriendly faces of their staff. If you score a seat on the bar stools you cancomplete your café experience with the picturesque street view.
The ingredients are fresh and locally-sourced and everything is served in environmentally friendly containers. With their vegan and gluten-free status, these waffles are a better choice for the animals, your body and the environment. The menu caters for everyone and you can go with a sweet or savoury option. Whichever route you choose, the waffles come warm, full of flavour and if your Instagram is in need of a foodie picture the plating has got you covered! The average waffle is R55 and average coffee R20. I’d recommend the golden girl which is a turmeric and ginger flavoured waffle topped with maple syrup, nuts and chocolate chips. You can pair your waffle with a coffee or if you’re more adventurous a turmeric or matcha latte. I’m turmeric crazy so naturally I ordered the turmeric latte. You can choose almond, soy or coconut milk and if you’re a fan of turmeric and ginger, I promise this warm drink will not disappoint. They also have a variety of delectable milkshakes. But because you’ll be coming back for more after your first bite, you’ll have plenty of occasions to test something new out on the menu and explore all the goodness they have to offer.
There are waffles with peanut butter, caramel, banana, chocolate and nuts – if you’re looking for a sweet option – or you could go savoury with guacamole, ‘bacon’ bits and ‘mozzarella’. If none of the combinations suit your fancy, you can build your own from the base to the sauce and toppings and even pair it with a side of vegan ice cream. And if for some reason, waffles aren’t your thing, you can go with flapjacks instead.
Jessy’s waffles is a great spot for a date or meeting, getting some work done and cosying up with some great food and a book.
