“I only sing songs that are from my heart,” “Because if I can’t feel it, it’s not going to come out right” says Roc Nations newest artist singer/songwriter, Alexis Jordan.
Alexis was Born in Columbia, South Carolina, she has a rich cultural background. Her dad is Puerto Rican and her Mom has African American, Native American and European ancestroy. At 14, she entered America’s Got Talent and made it all the way to the semi-finals, thanks in part, to a thrilling performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing.”
“When I got off stage after singing ‘I Have Nothing’ Simon said, ‘You are an amazing singer,'” says Alexis. “At the time I was crying, like oh my gosh, Simon Cowell! It’s a little girl’s dream to be singing for him so I was just so overwhelmed.”
Later Alexis began making YouTube videos in between professional appearances. “I was like, Mom, this is so not cool!” remembers Alexis. “Kids don’t sing in front of cameras, it’s weird. It didn’t feel natural at all! But after I did it for a little while I thought it was fun.”
In September 2008, her Youtube page was racking up millions of views. At that time, the multi-platinum, award-winning production and writing team, Stargate, contacted Alexis and made arrangements for a meeting and recording session. “I thought if they didn’t love me then they wouldn’t fly me all the way out to New York,” says Alexis. “I knew I had a good chance. Once I got out there we recorded a few songs and JAY-Z came to the studio. I was so excited! And the next thing I knew I was signed to StarRoc/Roc Nation.”
Alexis thinks it important for her music to convey constructive messages that she feels is missing in mainstream music today. She wants to be a good role model to young girls and promotes self-respect and positivity.
Alexis didn’t always have it easy and was bullied a lot in High School. In one year she moved to 3 schools! Watch the video where she tells her fans to keep their heads held high, speak out and believe in their dreams.
Alexis’s hit ‘Happiness’ reached number one in Norway and the Netherlands, went triple platinum in Australia, and was chosen as the official song of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Her self-titled debut album was released in February 2011. The pop star, now 19, saw it enter the UK Official Album Charts in the top 10. Here in South Africa it went to #1 on the Kia take 40 S.A!

She really deserves it!!
Alexis Jordan’s debut album is out now, she sounds a little like Beyoncé.
It is filled with feel good music that makes you want to sing at the top of your lungs and dance around your room! Good Girl, Happiness and Hush Hush (which I’m sure you’ve all heard) are perfect pop songs. How You Like Me Now seems like a very personal song and has attitude. Love Mist, The Air That I breathe and Laying Around are chilled songs that make you want to fall in love too. I strongly suggest you go out and buy the album its just R120 at Musica.
