Throwback Thursday Tunes: Backstreet Boys/Black and Blue

For this weeks Throwback Thursday Tunes we’ve been listening to the album Black and Blue, by Backstreet Boys. This album was released in 2000 and was a huge hit, with good reason. We had an excellent reminiscing session here in the office.

When the album was released it sold a whopping 1.6 million copies in America in the first week, and a scarily impressive 5 million copies worldwide. The album was used to launch a 100 hour round the world tour, where they visited Cape Town! This album really marked the pinnacle of the band’s career.

The album is general poppy boyband stuff, but it’s good quality boyband pop. The lyrics are clever, entertaining and different and the album has a bit of attitude (just listen to Track 3 Get Another Boyfriend). The tunes are catchy and really get into your head. The harmonies and performances are brilliant. It’s not going to set the world on fire, but it’s great fun pop, and once you’ve started singing, you just can’t stop.

Favourite track has to be Shape of My Heart – we still knew all of the words (and sang them embarrassingly loudly).
