World Cup update 24/06

The most important result on Sunday (for our English editor) was of course the English defeat of Panama 6 goals to one. It was an impressive display from England, who often fail to excel in big competitions, and confirms their place in the next round. Panama had clearly decided to try and out-muscle England, but only ended up giving away endless free-kicks and two penalties. John Stones opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a powerful header from a corner kick.  While Harry Kane, England’s great hope, emphatically opened his personal account from the penalty spot. After a beautifully worked goal by Jesse Lingard, and another headed-goal by the full-back Stones, Kane thumped his second penalty into the back of the net. Kane completed his hat-trick midway through the second half to move to the top of the list in the race for the Golden Boot. Panama pulled a goal back at the end of the game but it was far too little, too late. England next meet Belgium, the other unbeaten team in the group, but regardless of the outcome, both teams have qualified for the next stage.

The other results of the day:

Japan vs Senegal: 2-2

Poland vs Columbia: 0-3
